While some increase in energy costs during winter is expected, your heating bill shouldn’t make you faint, gasp for air or cry. So why are your energy bills through the roof this winter? Beaver Brothers has some tips to help you find the source of your rising energy costs.
Thermostat set to A/C
Sometimes your house never seems to get warmer, forcing you to turn up the thermostat to no effect. If this is the case for you, check the thermostat first. It may have accidentally been set to A/C, which would explain why you can’t get warm! Make sure your thermostat is set to HEAT this winter.
ON thermostat setting
The next step is to check the fan setting on the thermostat. Is it set to ON? If so, the fan will run continuously, even when there’s no heat coming from the furnace. This will blow cold air, causing you to turn up the heat and waste money. Set your fan to AUTO so it only runs when it’s needed.
High heating bill? Check the air filter
Clean air filters are a must, especially during winter. Change your air filter at least once a month to keep your heating system running efficiently and your energy bills lower.
Undersized heating system? Call Beaver Brothers
If your heating system is too small, it will never be able to efficiently or effectively heat your home. You’ll have the heat cranked, and the furnace or heat pump will waste energy trying to warm a structure that is just too large. Call Beaver Brothers to assess your heating equipment and see if you need a larger unit for your home.
